D. Stuart Bowers – Phi Epsilon Chapter – UMD, 1981

Headshot of Stuart Bowers.Stuart was born and raised in the Baltimore area, and is a proud graduate of the University of Maryland. At Maryland, as a freshman he joined Zeta Psi’s Phi Epsilon Chapter. He held the offices of Pledge Master, Rush Chair, Gamma, Alpha Sigma, and Sigma. Stuart was very involved in both the Interfraternity Council and the Student Government Association. He was a member of Kalegathos (Greek Honorary Society), Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership Organization) and received the Wilson Elkins Award which is presented to a member of the graduating senior class who has displayed outstanding involvement and leadership in campus activities and who has contributed significantly to the general advancement of student affairs.

Stuart graduated with a major in Government and Politics, and a minor in Economics. He worked as a student volunteer for the Regan-Bush campaign in 1980, and as an intern and then employee for his Maryland Representative to the US Congress. In 1982 Stuart began a career at the financial services firm, Legg Mason, that lasted over 27 years, where he rose to Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Operations. Stuart and three friends then had their own consulting firm for two years, before they were acquired by DST Systems Inc. At DST, Stuart moved from Chief Operating Officer of a new Brokerage Solutions business unit, to President of that same group. DST was acquired and is now part of SS&C Technologies, providing technology and business outsourcing to the Financial Services and Healthcare industries worldwide.

Stuart has served on both the Fraternity Executive Committee as well as the Foundation Board of Trustees. He has chaired the Technology Committee, the Fundraising Committee and the Zeta Psi Capital Campaign to endow our Membership Education activities. He has served as Sigma Alpha, Gamma Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, and was elected Phi Alpha in August 2018. Stuart has also served as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of the Educational Foundation.

Stuart continues to be involved as a volunteer at both his own, Phi Epsilon chapter and more generally, in support of the University of Maryland. He has served on the University Alumni Association board, the Athletic Council, and several positions in the Terrapin Club (supporting University Athletics), including President of that Club. At the Phi Epsilon chapter, Stuart has mentored many undergraduates and elders over the years. He also provided the initial funding for a permanent Phi Epsilon Scholarship Fund within the Educational Foundation.

Stuart was involved in the early years of the Leadership Training Institute and created a model pledge program that to this day is still duplicated and benchmarked with great success.

Stuart and his better half, Mary Perry, reside in Naples, Florida, and spend summers in Fenwick Island, DE.
