Ruford Franklin

Ruford Franklin, Alpha 1886, Phi Alpha 1929-1930

Ruford Franklin, Alpha 1886, was an attorney and civic leader. He graduated from Columbia College and Columbia Law School and practiced law in New York City until 1920. He then joined the Henry Phipps Estates as an attorney.

Brother Franklin served as a member of the Summit, New Jersey Common Council for
13 years and as Mayor for two terms in 1916-1918 and 1918-1920. He was Chairman
of Draft Board #3 of Union County, President of the Summit National Defense Council and a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of War during World War I.

During Brother Franklin’s term as Phi Alpha, the Grand Chapter approved the chartering
of the Mu Theta chapter at the University of Alberta. Always active with the Alpha
chapter at Columbia University, he served on the Board of the alumni association and
was active in the Zeta Psi Club of New York City.
