John Crawford Frost

J. Crawford Frost, Jr., Xi, 1922, Phi Alpha 1960-1961

J. Crawford Frost, Jr., Xi, 1922,  was a successful investment broker and steadfast supporter of the University of Michigan chapter for more than 60 years.

Born and raised in Grosse Pointe Farms, Brother Frost resided in the community for more than 70 years and was active in the local zoning board and Theatre Arts Society. He was also a past president of the Detroit Philatelist Society, specializing in air mail stamps. Brother Frost was also an excellent left-handed bowler who won many tournaments at the Country Club of Detroit.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, Brother Frost worked with Relm Realty in Ann Arbor and was an investment broker with Walter Briggs Company in Detroit. In 1960, he started his own investment business from which he retired in 1976. Always an
active man, his wife said in his obituary that after his retirement “he continued to go into
the office in the Ford Building to read the Wall Street Journal, go through his mail and
have lunch” several days a week.

During his tenure as Phi Alpha, Brother Frost was proud to participate in the chartering
of the Pi Sigma chapter at Penn State University and the Theta chapter at the University
of Connecticut. To demonstrate the spirit of the man, a past Phi Alpha described his
visit to meet with the active and elder Boards of the Xi chapter in the late 1970s. Brother
Frost attended that meeting as an ex-officio member. During the meeting, a local
sorority began serenading outside the Zeta Psi house and Brother Frost went outside
and joined them in song.
