John Sudell Gebhardt, Phi, 1969, Phi Alpha 1982-84
John Sudell Gebhardt, Phi, 1969, began his Wall Street career as an undergraduate at NYU’s Stern School of Business, landing a position with PaineWebber as an OTC Trader, pre-NASDAQ. Four years later, John moved to Minneapolis and soon became President of the Zeta Psi Elders Association of Minnesota. Returning to Wall Street, John rose to become a Managing Director at PaineWebber, running a Third Market Trading Desk as well as Marketing and Sales for their NASDAQ Department Creating the first electronic stop orders for NASDAQ issues, John helped the department to reach a #1 retail NASDAQ ranking and to maintain that for ten years. Leaving PaineWebber in 1998, John joined Knight Capital Markets to originate and manage their listed securities Block Desk. In two and a half years that department reached a #2 industry ranking.
Moving to Armonk, NY, after marrying the former Gail Moore in 1980, they raised two children there. Leaving the Zeta Phi International Board after 12 years in 1989, John was elected to the Board of Education in the Byram Hills School District, where he also served for 12 years. Including three terms as President of that board, John also served on the board of the Westchester-Putnam School Boards Association for 11 years and two terms on the Board of Directors of the NY State School Boards Association, as well as on the National School Boards Association Federal Relations Network.
Retiring to Orlando, FL, Brother Gebhardt has remained active in education by serving on the
board of the Education Foundation of Osceola County, a non-profit arm of the public county
school district, serving as Chairman in 2018-20. He is also on the Board of Directors of the
Osceola Boys and Girls Clubs, the Florida Alliance for Arts Education, and on the Orange
County League of Women Voters’ Juvenile Justice Committee. John has found time to also
help coach and serve as education director for a youth basketball program since 2008.
Brother Gebhardt continues to serve on the fraternity’s Financial Advisory Committee and has
since 1989. In 2002 he was honored with Zeta Psi’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. He and Gail now reside in the Bay Hill community in Orlando, FL.
