Gustavus Remak, Jr. Sigma, 1882, Phi Alpha 1900-1901
Gustavus Remak, Jr. Sigma, 1882, was a gifted attorney and insurance executive. He was a close friend of Ellis Ballard, another Sigma Zete and Phi Alpha.
As an undergraduate, Brother Remak was class president, editor-in-chief of the University magazine, captain of the University of Pennsylvania varsity football team and a member of the varsity baseball team.
As a practicing attorney, he had a specialty in representing insurance companies and argued a case before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the Aetna Insurance Company. In addition to his legal work, he was President of the Insurance Company of the State of Pennsylvania. He was also the author of “Digest of Law of Negotiable Instruments in Pennsylvania.”
He was a nationally recognized Whist player competing with Brother Ballard with the
Hamilton Club of Philadelphia.
Throughout his life, Brother Remak was an active volunteer and financial supporter of the
Philadelphia Association of Zeta Psi and Zeta Psi Fraternity of North America, Inc.
