Ernest H. Hawkins, Gamma, 1907, Phi Alpha 1934-1935
Ernest H. Hawkins, Gamma, 1907, was a mechanical engineer and nationally recognized procurement officer.
Brother Hawkins was a procurement officer for Allis-Chambers Manufacturing Company
in Philadelphia and for more than thirty years with E. J. De Nemors & Company in
Wilmington, Delaware. He was a member of the National Association of Purchasing Agents and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was also a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Society.
In 1949-1950, Brother Hawkins served as a consultant to the United States House of
Representatives Committee on Appropriations regarding the National Military Establishment Appropriations Bill for 1950.
He was a major supporter of Syracuse University and was the keynote speaker in 1938 at the College of Engineering’s commencement. He also received the University’s highest alumni award, the George Arents Award, in 1945.
As Phi Alpha during the heart of the Great Depression, Brother Hawkins accomplished
the remarkable feat of visiting each Zeta Psi chapter during his term of office.
