Notable Zetes

For over 170 years, Zeta Psi has scaffolded our undergraduate brothers to be better leaders in their careers, communities, and in service to all humankind. Lyon, Richards P.,MD

Achievements: Author of his memoir, at age 93, "A Process Mind" (linked below), also wrote "1000 Napa County Wildflowers", plus 2 books on winemaking. Served as the assistant surgeon for First Battalion, 24th Marines during the battle of Iwo Jima A pioneer innovator in Pediatric Urology

Mayer, Jr., Alexander “Sandy”

Achievements: 1972 Winner (with fellow Zete) Roscoe Tanner of the NCAA Tennis Doubles Championship. 1973 NCAA Men's tennis champion in singles and with (fellow Zete) James Delaney, doubles. Ranked as high as #7 in the world on the ATP Men's tennis tour. Champion, 1975 Men's doubles at Wimbledon, with Vitas Gerulatis. Champion, 1979 French Open Men's doubles with his brother, Gene Mayer.

McChesney, Robert Edward

Achievements: 2 time Pro-Bowler with the Boston/Washington Redskins of the NFL (1938 and 1942).

McColl, Duncan B.

Achievements: Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame. Defensive end for the Cardinals. He holds the school record for sacks in a season (17), ranks second in school history in tackles for loss in a season (26) and in a career (57), and 6th in career sacks (25). McColl is eighth in school history in career tackles (347) and led the team with 139 in 1975. A two-time All-American and All-Pac 8 selection, he was selected for the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl. Brother of Dr. Milt McColl. McColl was selected in the fourth round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins.

McColl, Jr., MD, William F. “Bill”

Achievements: A pass catching Offensive End, Two-time consensus All-American and third runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1951. That same year, he became the first person to receive the "W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy" as the outstanding football player on the Pacific Coast. 1973 Inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. 1952-1959, played Defensive and Offensive End for the Chicago Bears. One of the first Ends to be described as a Tight End. Become an orthopedic surgeon and served in Korea as a Presbyterian missionary doctor from 1962 to 1964. Father of Zeta Psi Mu Brothers Duncan and Milt McColl.

Achievements: American diplomat, attorney, and academic who served in senior national security positions under presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. US National Security Council's coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa (2021-Present).

McLaughlin, James H.

Term: Phi Alpha from 1971–1974. Zeta Psi Distinguished Service Award 1974. Namesake and Inaugural James H. McLaughlin Interfraternity Service Award 1982. One of three original trustees of the Zeta Psi Foundation of Canada (1974). Third President of the Zeta Psi Foundation of Canada.

Roy McMurty

McMurtry Jr., OC, OOnt, The Hon. R. Roy

Achievements: Chief Justice, Ontario Supreme Court (1996-2007). Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom(1985-1988). 12th Chancellor of York University (2008 - 2014). The headquarters of the Attorney General of Ontario, McMurtry-Scott Building, is named in honour of McMurtry and Ian Scott (former AG 1985-1990).

McMurtry Jr., OC, OOnt, The Hon. R. Roy

Achievements: Author, "Memoirs and Reflections" Few people have had a career as extensive, varied, and transformative as R. Roy McMurtry. In the public positions he held – reforming attorney general of Ontario, architect of the agreement that brought about the patriation of the Canadian Constitution, high commissioner to the United Kingdom, and chief justice of Ontario – he made immense contributions to Canadian law, politics, and life. Throughout, he has been a champion of anti-racism and human rights and an inspiring leader and motivator of others. Roy McMurtry also founded the Osgoode Society.
