Mu Theta Chapter Closes After 95 Years at the University of Alberta
It is with heartfelt regret that Zeta Psi announces the closure of the Mu Theta Chapter at the University of Alberta. This marks the end of a historic era for one of our longest-standing Canadian chapters.
Despite the dedication of its undergraduate brothers, Mu Theta has faced mounting challenges over the past several years. By the Spring of 2025, the chapter’s active membership had dwindled to fewer than ten brothers. This decline made it increasingly difficult to sustain the recruitment strength and engagement required to uphold Zeta Psi’s standards of excellence.
Compounding these internal challenges, the University of Alberta made the significant decision to withdraw housing for all Greek-letter organizations on campus. This change had a profound effect on Mu Theta’s operational capabilities and long-term viability, removing an essential anchor for the chapter’s community presence and stability.
In May 2025, after thoughtful deliberation, the undergraduate members of Mu Theta made the decision to return their charter. That difficult decision was recently affirmed by the Elder Chapter, formalizing the chapter’s closure.
Since 1930, the Mu Theta chapter fostered leadership, scholarship, and brotherhood among its members and made lasting contributions to the University of Alberta community. We extend our deepest gratitude to the many generations of Mu Theta brothers who carried forward its legacy with pride and commitment.
Zeta Psi’s International Headquarters remains steadfast in our belief that Alberta remains a promising home for future expansion. When the conditions on campus become more favorable, we are committed to exploring opportunities to re-establish Zeta Psi’s presence at the University of Alberta.
Until then, we honor the rich legacy of Mu Theta — one built on nearly a century of service, brotherhood, and enduring bonds.
