Resolution 1862: The Circle Shall Never Be Broken

During the Grand Chapter Meeting at the 178th Convention of Zeta Psi, held in Detroit, Michigan, Br. Evan Pressman read a powerful resolution reaffirming one of our oldest and most enduring values: that the bonds of brotherhood transcend the boundaries of politics, distance, and disagreement.

In July of 1862, amid the strife of the American Civil War, the Grand Chapter proclaimed that “no dispute, political or otherwise, shall separate Brothers from the union of Tau Kappa Phi.” More than 160 years later, we find ourselves in another era of external pressures and global division. And yet, as was true then, the Circle of Zeta Psi remains whole and resolute.

The Grand Chapter formally adopted the following Resolution at this year’s Convention:

Be it RESOLVED that Zeta Psi Fraternity reflects upon a resolution the Grand Chapter approved in July 1862: that no dispute, political or otherwise, shall separate Brothers from the union of Tau Kappa Phi.

Be it RESOLVED that the Grand Chapter respectfully acknowledges that some Brothers could not or opted not to travel to the 178th Convention.

Be it RESOLVED that the Grand Chapter reaffirms its position that no matter the state of any dispute going on outside our organization, the Circle of Zeta Psi shall never be broken.

These words, both timeless and timely, remind us that our strength lies not in uniformity of thought, but in unwavering commitment to one another. As we move forward, we do so together—mindful of our history, clear in our principles, and united in brotherhood. The Circle shall never be broken.
